A retirement party should feel like a celebration of a person, not the final meeting they have to attend. You can recognize the years of work, enjoy the speeches, and still give everyone something to do once the commemorative plaque has been photographed.
For retirement party entertainment in Charlotte, comedy close-up magic and con games offer a shared activity for adult guests. Colleagues, friends, and family can gather around the performance and discover that professional experience offers limited protection against a suspiciously friendly man with dice.
I’m Timothy Starnes, necromancer and comedy conjurer. I’m best known for my comedy séance touring the East Coast, and I’m also a trained comedy and bar magician. The right retirement-party format depends on the guest of honor, the setting, and the people celebrating with them. Explore the company event show options or use the planning guide below to choose an arrangement.
Plan around the person who is retiring
Start with a few details about the guest of honor. Do they enjoy playful challenges? Are they comfortable participating? Would they rather watch their friends become confidently mistaken?
Tell me those things before we choose the material. A party can honor someone without turning into a surprise roast. Let me know which jokes, work stories, or personal subjects should stay out of the performance. Nobody earns a mandatory public embarrassment after decades of employment.
My shows are for adults 18 and up. If the celebration includes younger family members, mention that while planning so we can establish whether a separate adult performance time or area is workable. I don’t provide children’s entertainment or supervision.
Choose a company reception or a private dinner format
For a company-hosted reception, a performance station gives guests a place to gather between conversations. I work from that station, allowing people to approach on their own terms. Comedy, cards, con games, bar bets, and dice magic provide a shared point of interest without requiring everybody to know the same office history.
For a smaller dinner with friends or family, we can discuss a seated arrangement after the meal. Everyone needs to see the working area and hear the performance. Send the actual room layout and guest count before assuming that every seat at a very long dining table will have the same view.
The corporate magic and con-game page covers company events. The private dinner-party page is useful if you’re organizing the celebration at home or in a restaurant’s private room.
Give the speeches their moment and the magic its own
The guest of honor deserves to hear the speeches. The people making them deserve an audience that isn’t simultaneously trying to follow a card trick.
One possible order is arrivals, dinner, remarks and gifts, then the performance. Another is a magic station during the initial reception, finishing before everyone gathers for the formal tribute. These are planning examples; we’ll agree on the actual schedule with you.
Send any firm start and finish times, food-service windows, and presentations. I usually spend one to two hours working a party, with the performance length adjusted to the event. Include setup and access in the discussion so the host isn’t negotiating furniture while the speech begins.
Use con games as entertainment, with the tone agreed
Con-game magic is theatrical entertainment built around fast hands, persuasive talk, and unreliable assumptions. Guests follow the action, consider their choices, and get to laugh together when the obvious answer turns out to have been poorly advised.
It can fit a retirement reception particularly well when the group enjoys a playful challenge. We’ll agree on the humor and audience involvement in advance. This is entertainment for your celebration; it is not a fraud-prevention course or an assessment of anybody’s professional judgment.
Finally, a retirement benefit that includes some honest dishonesty.
Make the room comfortable for the actual guests
My working setup is three chairs and a table, or a coffee table with ample audience seating in front and to the sides. I don’t use a sound system, so background music and the distance between the audience and the performance matter.
Tell me about seating preferences, access needs, and any concern about guests hearing or seeing small objects. We can discuss the room before booking. A crowded bar corner with no clear view is not improved by describing it as “cozy.”
If the guest of honor loves the spooky, a two-hour theatrical comedy séance is another option for an intimate adult gathering. I generally suggest about 10–15 guests, or as many as the dining table comfortably accommodates. It is theatrical entertainment, not mediumship. The retirement celebration does not require a séance unless that is the evening you want.
Check your retirement party date
Text Tim at 704-698-7286 with the date, Charlotte-area venue, guest count, schedule, and a little about the person retiring. Say whether the company or a private host is organizing it and which format interests you.
I’ll discuss availability and a personalized quote. Parties outside the Charlotte, NC area have a two-hour minimum, with any travel costs and the full booking total confirmed in advance.
Give them a proper send-off. The only thing disappearing permanently should be their obligation to answer work emails.
