A rehearsal dinner brings together people who may have known the couple for thirty years and people still quietly checking which parent belongs to whom. They need something to talk about once the introductions run out.
Rehearsal dinner entertainment in Charlotte can give adult guests a shared experience before the wedding day. Comedy close-up magic and con games create a reason to gather, laugh, and compare theories. It is a useful evening to discover that both families are equally capable of being wrong about a deck of cards.
I’m Timothy Starnes, necromancer and comedy conjurer. I’m best known for my comedy séance show touring the East Coast, and I’m also a trained comedy and bar magician. You can book close-up magic for a private dinner without a séance. The wedding already has plenty of people to invite.
Choose the moment when guests can actually enjoy it
The rehearsal, travel to dinner, food service, and toasts come first in the schedule. Give the performance a clear place around those commitments.
Two arrangements are worth considering:
- A station during the welcome period. Adult guests can come over as they settle in and meet one another. Place it where people can gather without obstructing arrivals, drinks service, or the route to dinner.
- A performance after dinner and toasts. A smaller group can focus on the magic once plates are cleared and the formal remarks are finished. This needs a suitable viewing arrangement and enough time before the evening ends.
I typically work a party for one to two hours, with the performance length adjusted to the plans. Share the real timetable before deciding on a booking. “After Uncle David finishes speaking” is an event organizer’s cry for help, not a time.
Let guests join without turning dinner into an assignment
I work from a dedicated performance station. People can finish greeting relatives, join the action when they’re ready, and bring somebody else over to see it.
Cards, props, dice magic, and the hustler’s art give people something specific to watch and react to. Guests who have only just met can start discussing the same impossible moment. Participation and humor should fit the room, and we’ll talk about that before booking.
Tell me how much attention the couple enjoys. They may want to participate. They may also appreciate a few minutes during which nobody is asking them to make a decision. A rehearsal dinner can celebrate them without making every activity another obligation.
Be clear about an adult audience
My performances are for audiences 18 and up. A wedding-related event is not automatically an adults-only event, so include the ages attending in your first message.
If children will be present, we need to establish whether a separate adult performance area or time is practical. I do not provide children’s entertainment or supervision. If the dinner is intended to have one shared activity for all ages, tell me that before proceeding so we can assess the fit honestly.
For the adult group, explain the desired tone and any topics you want left alone. Dark comedy can have manners. They simply need to be invited in advance.
Coordinate the setup with the restaurant or host
If you’re using a restaurant’s private room, confirm outside entertainment with its team. Ask when servers need access, when plates will be cleared, and where the performance can happen without interfering with their work.
My standard setup is a table and three chairs, or a coffee table with ample audience seating in front and to the sides. For an existing dining arrangement, send a room photo and guest count so we can assess sightlines. Long tables and separated seating areas require some thought; close-up magic needs to be seen up close.
I don’t use a sound system. Choose a place where guests can hear, and coordinate any background music accordingly. We’ll agree on arrival and setup timing, including parking and access. The space and seating guide explains the practical details.
Keep the séance as a deliberate choice
My signature theatrical séance is a two-hour experience, best planned for an intimate group of about 10–15 or as many as the dining table comfortably accommodates. It can suit an adult wedding-weekend gathering when the group wants that atmosphere and has the time.
It is theatrical entertainment, not mediumship or promised contact with deceased loved ones. If your rehearsal dinner has a tight finish or frequent interruptions, comedy close-up magic may fit the plan more comfortably. Read what happens in the séance show before making it the centerpiece.
Send the details that make a useful quote possible
Text Tim at 704-698-7286 with the rehearsal dinner date, Charlotte-area venue, adult guest count, any children attending, dinner and toast times, and the required finish time. Mention the couple’s preferred tone and the venue’s entertainment arrangements.
I’ll discuss availability and a personalized quote. Parties outside the Charlotte, NC area have a two-hour minimum; travel and the booking total are confirmed before reserving.
If you need entertainment on the wedding day instead, see the wedding cocktail-hour planning guide. Give the families a shared mystery now. They have years to develop the other kind.
